How to Find the Blessing in the Everyday

The daily grind of motherhood can truly wear you out. We don't get a parade when the house is picked up, dinner is on the table, or even when they have clean clothes.

Although I love being a mom, finding the blessing in the everyday is bit difficult sometimes.

Maria from the Sound of Music had a list of her favorite things. You may remember them they were:

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kitten,
bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,
brown paper packages tied up with strings,
these are a few of my favorite things.

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels,
door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles.
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings,
these are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes,
snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes,
silver white winters that melt into springs,
these are a few of my favorite things.

Without these images set to music they are sort of just everyday things. But when you read them and truly picture them in your mind, they conjure a feeling of nostalgia.

The everyday of motherhood is the same way, but without Julie Andrews singing. The visual list of the everyday things of motherhood can conjure feelings as well. We get to decide what feelings it will elicit.

Just for a chuckle, I created my a own version of My Favorite Things called My Everyday Things. Click here to check it out.

Now that you've laughed, let's figure out how to find the blessing in these everyday things.

Change Your Perspective

Have you ever done one of those painting classes and you've painted something and looked at it and thought...ugh, well this was a waste of money! Then you walk away to go to the bathroom and when you're walking back you look at your painting and think, WOW I DID THAT? It truly motivates you to keep painting and you finish with a better attitude.

This is the same thing for motherhood. When you're in the middle of the everyday, you know the list that never seems to end, it's hard to find the blessing. You're too close to truly look at your painting with the right perspective.

But if you step back and look at your kids, your little paintings, what do you see?

YEP! YOU DID THIS! They are happy, healthy and truly well rounded children. They are content even in the messiness of life. God chose you to be their mom. He saw you and said, "Yep, you have what it takes for this one."

Practice Self Control

This is a tough one when in the heat of the moment or the stuff of the day. However, as a thinking human, created by God, you have the ability to control your thoughts. It might take a minute but you can do it.

In order to do this, you have to, much like finding a better perspective, you have to take a step back. Take a deep breath, walk away from the situation and then regain control.

It doesn't mean that you don't get upset, it's just how you react to a situation that will be different.

Life gets messy. Motherhood has it's good and bad days. But only you can choose to find the blessing in the everyday of it.

Only you control your attitude and your perspective. You always have a choice.

The days are long but the years are short.

To find the blessing in the everyday, step back and look at what you've already accomplished and move forward in the confidence that God chose you.

I'm praying for you mama! You're doing a great job!
